landowners
A range of issues must be considered when selecting an appropriate site. These include environmental and social aspects, including local and national planning policies, environmental designations and proximity to homes, and also technical, engineering and economic considerations, such as prevailing wind speeds, ease of access and connection to the grid.
The ideal target site will have the following attributes.
- sufficient mean wind speed
- good grid connection
- no radar or other airport/airfield issues
- available access
- not within national or European designations
- compliant with recognised noise criteria
- suitable distance from residential properties
Wind energy projects take up very little land space allowing both arable and pastoral farming practices to continue largely unaffected. Following construction, the foundation area is back-filled and the hard standing re-instated leaving exposed the bottom of each wind turbine tower which is only about 5m in diameter. Grass or crops can then be re-seeded and can grow up to the base of each tower.
