Wathegar 2 Wind Farm
Whirlwind is working with a group of Caithness landowners on a nine turbine, 18 megawatt wind farm at Wathegar, some 8km west of Wick in Caithness, Scotland and adjacent to the consented Wathegar Wind Farm.
A planning application was submitted to Highland Council in October 2011. For further details and to view the planning documents click here.
The site is located on land near two operational wind farms and one consented wind farm: Flex Hill and Wathegar wind farms will be to the west and Achairn Wind Farm will be to the east of Wathegar 2. The layout has been informed by the environmental studies carried out at site with the aim of optimising the energy produced while minimising the environmental effects, including the visual impact.
Based on wind speed data gathered from the on-site anemometer mast as part of our Wathegar Wind Farm proposal, Wathegar 2 Wind Farm would produce enough electricity to meet the need of approximately 13,400 homes.
If the scheme is consented, we are committed to establishing a community benefit fund which would provide income for the local residents to spend on local projects and initiatives.
Whirlwind is in early discussions with The North Highland College to provide a fund from Wathegar 2 to support the development of skills and employment opportunities in the renewable energy sector (and related areas) in Caithness. The fund will be payable for the lifetime of the wind farm. Whirlwind is proud to be associated with the College and looks forward to being able to support this exciting new initiative!
Whirlwind invites people local to the scheme who may have queries or comments on the plans to contact us.
