wind power
Wind turbines use the wind's lift forces to rotate aerodynamic blades that turn a rotor which creates electricity. In the UK we have 40% of Europe's total wind energy, but it is still largely untapped.
Clean, renewable forms of energy, such as wind power, are essential if we are to tackle climate change.
Due to the climate, the resources available (most crucially, high average wind speeds and availability of suitable sites) and Government support, the UK is ideal for wind energy projects. It was recently ranked the second best country in the world to develop a wind energy site (Ernst & Young Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Indices).
There are currently over 280 operational wind farm sites in the UK, which comprise over 3,000 wind turbines with a total output in excess of 5,200 megawatts – enough to power over 300,000 homes.
Up to date information on all sites: consented, under construction and operational sites, is available on the RenewableUK website at: www.bwea.com.
